How to Sleep Through IVF Stimulation: A Wind Down Routine

Stimulation medication and the anxiety are a difficult combination for sleep, hormonally, your body is more alert than usual, and mentally, there’s rarely a night during this phase that doesn’t involve at least one lap of “what if I don’t respond to the medication”

A well structured wind down routine in the hour before bed won’t cancel out the hormones your injecting, however it can give your mind somewhere to land instead of circling around and around like a plane in Die Hard 2……

The Mindful Bedtime Routine

60 minutes before bed: close the day’s medical admin both in mind and body.
Take your injection (if it’s due), log your dose, and note any appointment times if you have one. The goal is to get everything out of your head and onto paper, so it isn’t the thing your mind returns to once the lights are off. This is the process of taking a thought and turning it into an action. Mind to Paper……. Seriously you will be blown away by the simplicity of this.

30 minutes before bed: a short guided wind down.
Ten minutes of guided breathing or a body scan, with your screens off, unless your using our Mindful IVF app…. 🙂 This is the point where a lot of stimulation phase insomnia can start, not just from the hormones, but also with the added stimulation from scrolling symptom forums while in bed, which you say to yourself “just for a minute.”

10 minutes before bed: a falling asleep breath count.
Once you’re in bed: inhale for four, exhale for eight. The longer exhale relative to the inhale is what does the work here. If the mind wanders to follicle counts or tomorrow’s scan, count breaths instead of counting follicles, one to ten, then back to one, for as long as it takes, this is called Zen Breath meditation, it takes us from an emotional mind to a logical mind…. Like counting sheep for kids.

Why this works

Stimulation medication genuinely does raise physiological arousal, so sleep issues during this phase isn’t just “in your head”, taking time to have a wind down routine gives your nervous system a reliable, repeated cue that the day’s medical tasks are finished and it’s safe to down the tools of the day. Getting your own daily concerns onto paper 60 minutes helps reduce the chance they resurface once you’re trying to fall asleep, and the extended exhale in the final step is one of the more reliable ways to nudge the body toward the rest state. Taking you from the daily ‘Doing Mode’ into the settling down ‘Being Mode’

The Stimulation Wind Down session takes just 10 minutes, and add it to your evening routine with timed guidance, so you’re not watching the clock to know when to move to the next step.

Beyond stimulation

The same structure works for other high anxiety moments in your IVF cycle where sleep tends to suffer, the nights before a scan, just before transfer, during the (wonderful) two week wait. Related sessions are grouped under Sleep & IVF in the app, alongside the broader IVF Cycle Support programs that we have. Again these are here to support you.
